In architecture, a good idea doesn’t always translate into a good building. Sometimes things just work better on paper. But sometimes, a clear concept really delivers once its built – like the design for the new TKTS booth in New York City.
Winner of an international competition in 2000, architects John Choi and Tai Rohipa’s design cleverly goes beyond its brief as a ticket booth to create an urban plaza in the middle of Times Square. The booth’s “roof” is built of red laminated glass to form a welcoming seating area that is almost completely absent in the non-stop bustle of downtown New York. At night, the roof works as a glowing red carpet, energizing the plaza in a sea of competing signs and billboards.
